Our two-year MPhil Accounting programme stands out with its focus on independent research, culminating in a thesis in the second year. Philosophy of the Programme
The MPhil in Accounting programme is unwavering in its commitment to fostering high-level expertise and critical thinking in accounting. The programme prepares students to contribute significantly to academic knowledge and professional practice through rigorous research and analytical training.
The philosophy of this programme is to provide students with a sound grounding in conducting independent research to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This approach enables them to function as academic accounting researchers, lecturers, accountants, and consultants, among others.
The curriculum emphasises developing graduates’ needed skills and competencies in corporate and integrated reporting, auditing, and management accounting, all with a strong focus on their practical application in real-world scenarios. We also foster an understanding of accounting practices’ ethical and societal impacts to provide policy direction and inform decision-making for businesses and governments, ensuring our students are well-prepared for future challenges.
Programme Objectives.
The MPhil Accounting programme aims to train human resources in accounting, with a focus on teaching and conducting research in accounting. It also aims to produce world-class academic researchers and professionals who can drive innovation and influence policy in the global accounting environment.
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
• Bridge the gap between theory and practice through research in accounting.
• Provide an in-depth understanding and mastery of the theories, methods and practices of Accounting as an academic discipline and a profession.
• Equip students with the research methodologies, techniques, analytical frameworks, and statistical packages needed for the accounting discipline.
• Develop students’ critical thinking, scholarly writing, and presentation skills and their ability to publish in ranked scientific journals.
• Equip students with the ethical values and principles required of a researcher to conduct accounting research and practice ethically.
• Prepare students for teaching and research careers in the public and private sectors to contribute to advancing the accounting discipline.
• Sharpen students’ ability for self-learning and life-long study through the conduct of quality research and the application of knowledge acquired.

Programme Coordinator’s Profile
Ms. Liquenda Oboshie Torgbor, a lecturer with the Department of Banking and Finance, Faculty of Accounting and Finance, is deeply committed to the success of the MPhil in Accounting programme.
Her teaching portfolio includes courses such as Research Methods, Principles of Accounting, Taxation, Money and Capital Markets, Investment Fundamentals and Introduction to Business Finance.
Her research interests span financial reporting, corporate and personal finance, and the intersection between accounting and finance. She is particularly fascinated by how accounting information influences investment decisions, capital markets, and corporate behaviour.
Ms. Torgbor’s academic journey is marked by excellence, holding a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Philosophy in Finance from the prestigious University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Her professional affiliations include being an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana. In addition to teaching and researching, she also serves as the coordinator for the MPhil Finance and MPhil Accounting programmes, overseeing their development and ensuring their alignment with the university’s academic standards. She takes on this role with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm.
