Welcome to the Master of Science in Risk Management and Insurance at the School of Graduate Studies, University of Professional Studies, Accra. I am pleased to have you join a programme that will sharpen your judgement on risk, deepen your command of insurance, and prepare you for senior practice in a sector that sits at the heart of every functioning economy.
The MSc in Risk Management and Insurance is a rigorous one-year programme that combines theoretical foundations with applied technique. The curriculum has been reviewed and accepted by the Insurance Institute of Ghana and the Ghana Insurance College, and is taught by faculty with strong industry and research credentials. Students engage with advanced material in insurance, risk analysis, and mitigation, and learn to apply insurance risk management techniques to live problems in firms, regulators, and the wider economy.
Whether your aim is to advance within the insurance industry or to broaden your expertise in enterprise risk, the programme will give you the tools, evidence base, and professional judgement needed to lead. My door, and the doors of the teaching team, remain open throughout the year.
Philosophy of the Programme
The MSc in Risk Management and Insurance trains graduates to apply insurance risk management techniques to real-world problems. The curriculum places emphasis on the ability of graduates to analyse, predict, and adopt appropriate strategies to mitigate the impact of risk on individuals, businesses, and the economy as a whole. The programme content has been reviewed and accepted by the Insurance Institute of Ghana and the Ghana Insurance College.
Programme Objectives
The MSc in Risk Management and Insurance equips students with the knowledge and skills to apply insurance risk management techniques to real-world problems. The specific objectives are to:
- Strengthen students’ knowledge of the theory and practice of insurance risk management.
- Equip students with contemporary insurance risk management strategies, including Alternative Risk Transfer, to mitigate adverse operational outcomes across sectors.
- Build students’ understanding of the regulatory framework, insurance contracts and provisions, and the standards that govern the insurance industry.
- Develop students’ technical capacity and objective reasoning for senior roles in the insurance sector.
- Develop students’ competence to undertake independent research that addresses risk and related problems in the insurance sector.
- Equip students with the skills to use computer application software such as Java Virtual Machine and R for insurance risk management.
Programme Learning Outcomes
On completion of the MSc in Risk Management and Insurance, students will be able to:
- Apply theoretical knowledge of insurance risk management to live situations in firms, regulators, and government.
- Use contemporary insurance risk management strategies, including Alternative Risk Transfer (ART), to mitigate adverse operational outcomes across sectors.
- Apply the insurance regulatory framework, insurance contracts and provisions, and industry standards in professional practice.
- Demonstrate the technical capacity and objective reasoning required for senior roles in the insurance risk management sector.
- Conduct independent research to address risk and related problems in the insurance sector.
- Use computer application software such as Java Virtual Machine and R to solve insurance and related problems.
Programme Structure
The programme runs over two semesters within a single academic year. Each taught course carries three credit hours unless otherwise indicated. The four quadrants below set out the core courses and the elective options for each semester. Students take all listed core courses in each semester and select one elective per semester.

Programme Coordinator
Dr. Timothy Kwabla Zilevu

Dr. Timothy Kwabla Zilevu is a Lecturer in the Department of Marketing at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, where he coordinates the MSc in Risk Management and Insurance, He holds a PhD in Marketing and an MBA in Total Quality Management from UPSA, and a Chartered Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom. He is a Full Member of CIM and CIM Ghana, and a member of the American Marketing Association and the American Society for Quality.
His teaching covers Total Quality Management, Digital Marketing, International Marketing, Tourism Marketing, and Digital Optimisation Strategy at undergraduate and postgraduate level, alongside CIM professional marketing programmes. His research interests include quality management, risk and insurance research, digital transformation, sustainability marketing, marketing analytics, and the application of artificial intelligence in research and higher education. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences across Africa and beyond.
Dr. Zilevu has also led and contributed to applied research and consultancy projects for organisations including the E4Impact Foundation and Enterprise Insurance. He supervises MPhil and PhD research and supports quality assurance and accreditation processes within the Graduate School.
