Welcome to the Master of Philosophy in Finance programme offered by the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Professional Studies, Accra. We hope your academic experience in this programme will be exciting and enriching.

The MPhil in Finance is a two-year rigorous programme designed to provide students with the required skills and knowledge to conduct independent research in finance. This programme not only emphasises independent research work but also prepares you for real-world challenges, as students spend the entire second year writing an MPhil thesis under supervision.

Programme Philosophy

The philosophy of the MPhil Finance programme is to provide students with a sound grounding in conducting independent research to bridge the gap between theory and practice, enabling them to function as academic finance researchers, finance lecturers, portfolio managers, financial risk analysts, and consultants, among others.

The comprehensive curriculum emphasises developing graduates’ needed skills and competencies in financial modelling to provide policy direction and inform decision-making for businesses and governments.

Programme Objectives.

The MPhil Finance programme aims to produce world-class academic researchers and personnel in finance for Ghana and the world at large.

The specific objectives of the programme are to:

• Bridge the gap between theory and practice through research in finance.

• Enhance students’ ability to model financial economic events and policies in the financial sector.

• Build a strong basis to synthesise and theorise based on observed occurrences in finance.

• Strengthen students’ skills in finance-related academic research.

• To produce skilled and valuable finance personnel for Ghana’s financial and educational sectors and abroad.

• Sharpen students’ ability for self-learning and life-long study through the conduct of quality research and the application of knowledge acquired.

Programme Learning Outcomes

At the end of the programme, students will be able to:

• Apply the theoretical knowledge in finance to practice through research in finance.

• Model financial and economic events and policies in the financial sector.

• Synthesize and theorise based on observed occurrences in the field of finance.

• Acquire skills in finance-related academic research.

Programme Coordinator’s Profile

Ms. Liquenda Oboshie Torgbor, a lecturer with the Department of Banking and Finance, Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), is deeply committed to the success of the MPhil in Finance programme.

Her teaching portfolio includes courses such as Research Methods, Principles of Accounting, Taxation, Money and Capital Markets, Investment Fundamentals and Introduction to Business Finance. Her research interests span financial reporting, corporate and personal finance, and the intersection between accounting and finance. She is particularly fascinated by how accounting information influences investment decisions, capital markets, and corporate behaviour.

Ms. Torgbor’s academic journey is marked by excellence, holding a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Philosophy in Finance from the prestigious University of Professional Studies, Accra.

Her professional affiliations include being an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG). In addition to teaching and researching, she also serves as the coordinator for the MPhil Finance and MPhil Accounting programmes, overseeing their development and ensuring their alignment with the university’s academic standards. She takes on this role with unwavering dedication and enthusiasm.
